My name is Debbie Sterling and I am starting a Forensic Nursing blog! My plan is to publish a blog the first Friday of almost every month (January and July being the probable exceptions). All content will be related to Forensic Nursing and peripheral Forensic Nursing topics. After all, I identify as a Forensic Nurse!
I was born and raised in Manitoba (Canada). I served in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) for 3 years as a Medic and became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) after my release. I graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Nursing degree (BN) in 1992 and became a Registered Nurse (RN) shortly thereafter. My husband and I (along with our young daughters) picked up and moved to McAllen, Texas in December of that year and did the same in the summer of 1995 when we moved to New Braunfels, Texas. The four of us have been United States citizens since the spring of 2001.
I have been caring for people in some way, shape or form since 1977. I have served patients in several nursing specialties, in several patient-care settings, across the life span… from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to Hospice Care. I was certified in Pain Management for 8 years as a Clinical Associate through the American Academy of Pain Management (C-AAPM). For 10 years, I was a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) in surgery and a Certified Nurse in the Operating Room as a Perioperative Nurse (CNOR). I have been a Forensic Nurse since 1995 and became a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) in 2005. I was a CA-CP SANE (Certified Adult/Adolescent-Certified Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner; Texas certification) for 10 years and I maintain International SANE certifications in Adults, Adolescents and Pediatrics (SANE-A® since 2012; SANE-P® since 2013).
Medical Eagle Forensic Nurse Consultants, PLLC was established in 2011 to expand services for victims of sexual assault in and around Comal County (Texas) and to develop my interest in educating nurses in all things Forensic Nursing. In October 2016, Medical Eagle Forensic Nurses became an Approved Provider Unit for Continuing Nursing Education through the Texas Nurses Association. I was appointed as the Chair Person for the Education Committee of the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN.org) in January 2017.
My first official Forensic Nursing Blog will be shared on Friday October 5, 2018. See you then!
